How to Properly Startup a New System

Every new system that is installed does not come factory set and ready to go out of the box, so as installers we must “customize” each job to their unique environment. By performing a correct startup of every piece of equipment we can:

      1. Reduce breakdowns
      2. Build homeowner confidence in the company & equipment
      3. Reduce warranty claims
      4. Ensure years of reliable service
      5. Enable techs to identify potential problem areas with installation or equipment

Now more then ever with increasing demands for efficiency, complex hybrid systems and thermostats that control more and more features, it is critical that we customize each job to perform to its peak performance level. The following startup sheet or something similar can be used to help an installer go through a “checklist” of items to make sure that all features and benefits are being utilized by “tweaking” the system to perform to its very best.

Some of the items that demand our attention are listed below:

      1. Accurate airflow
      2. Correct refrigerant charge
      3. Thermostat configuration
      4. Low Voltage wiring
      5. Proper natural gas or propane manifold pressure

As with anything else in this industry, it takes practice. If you get stuck or confused on your readings, or have any other problems, please do not hesitate to contact us at
